Signal Iduna Park, the Westfalenstadion of old, has been Borussia Dortmund's home since 1974. It was built next to the old Rote Erde for the 1974 World Cup and opened on 2 April that year, with 54,000 places and a friendly against Schalke 04. The expansions of 1995, 1999 and 2003 turned it into the largest stadium in Germany: today it holds 81,365 spectators for Bundesliga matches. Its Südtribüne, the «Gelbe Wand» (Yellow Wall), is the largest standing terrace in Europe. It hosted matches at the 1974 and 2006 World Cups and at Euro 2024, and since December 2005 it has carried the name of an insurance company.

The fans
The heart of BVB's support beats in the Südtribüne of Signal Iduna Park, the largest standing terrace in Europe, with almost 25,000 places, known as the «Gelbe Wand» (the Yellow Wall). The great rival is Schalke 04, their Ruhr neighbours, with whom they have contested the Revierderby since 1925. Against Bayern Munich they play Der Klassiker, a rivalry that grew from the 1990s out of the battle for the title, with landmark moments such as the 2012 Cup final and the 2013 Champions League final. The club's motto is «Echte Liebe» (true love).
