The Stadion Rote Erde, opened in 1926, was Borussia Dortmund's home for 37 years, from 1937 to 1974. It was the stage for the title-winning era of the 1950s and 1960s, and for European nights such as the 0-0 draw with Manchester United in 1956 or the 1963 match against Benfica, officially watched by 42,000 people. When the club outgrew it, the city built the Westfalenstadion right next to it. Today it is an athletics stadium with a football capacity of 9,999, where BVB's reserve team and women's team play.
