## Students, a star and two stitched halves Slavia was born on 2 November 1892 in Prague, when a group of students set up a cycling section called ACOS (Akademický cyklistický odbor Slavia), linked to the Slavia literary society. “Slavia” is an old Latin name for the lands of the Slavic peoples. The police dissolved that society in 1894, and on 31 May 1895 Sportovní klub Slavia was founded, regarding itself as its heir. The football section was created on 21 January 1896 and the first match was played on 25 March that year, a win over AC Praha. Also in 1896 came the first derby against…

The Fortuna Arena has been Slavia's home since 2008 and stands in Vršovice, on the same site as the old Eden stadium, about 4 km from the centre of Prague. It opened on 7 May 2008 with a friendly against Oxford University, and ten days later Slavia celebrated the league title there. It holds 19,370, all seated and covered, and the pitch lies about five metres below street level, which gives it the feel of a cauldron. It was previously called Synot Tip Arena, Eden Aréna and Sinobo Stadium, and it also hosts Czech national team matches.
The fans
Slavia's fans and players are known as “Sešívaní” (the stitched ones), after the old shirt made of two halves sewn together, and also as “červenobílí” (the red-and-whites). Their great rival is Sparta: the Prague derby is the biggest match in Czech football, has been played since 1896 and reached its 317th edition in May 2026. At the Fortuna Arena, the home support stands behind the goal facing Vladivostocká street. Since 2006, at the end of every match, the players go over to the stand to sing with the fans, whatever the result.
