## Born in La Boca River Plate was officially founded on 25 May 1901 in La Boca, next to the port of Buenos Aires, through the merger of two neighbourhood clubs: Santa Rosa and La Rosales. Its first president was Leopoldo Bard. The name comes from the English way of referring to the Río de la Plata: according to the most widespread account, the founders read it on crates at the port. The shirt was all white until, during a carnival, some players tied a red ribbon across it; that is how the red sash was born. Some historians argue that the club was actually founded in 1904.
The fans
Its supporters are known as «millonarios» (millionaires), a nickname born from the record signings of Carlos Peucelle and Bernabé Ferreyra in the early 1930s. Rivals have called them «gallinas» (chickens) since the 1966 Copa Libertadores final, lost to Peñarol after leading 2-0. Its great derby is the Superclásico against Boca Juniors, which was already played in River's Libertadores debut in 1966. It is one of the clubs with the most members in the world, with more than 350,000.
