River Plate crest1985–1989
Medium confidence
Based on partial or low-quality photos.
This is the lion of Hugo Santilli's presidency: a lion wearing the River shirt rising above the Monumental stadium. It was conceived by designer Claudio Loiseau and drawn by his brother, the cartoonist Caloi, to leave behind the «gallinas» (chickens) nickname; it debuted on the shirt on 24 February 1985 against Unión, at the Monumental. With it on their chest River won the 1985-86 championship, the 1986 Copa Libertadores and Intercontinental Cup and the Interamericana, and it disappeared in 1989, when Santilli left the presidency.
- Period of use
- 1985–1989
- Type
- Official
- What changed
- On the shirt it replaced the traditional crest with the red sash with a figurative drawing: the lion and the stadium. It was never the club's official crest, which remained the sash crest, and when it was retired in 1989 the shirt went several years without a crest until the traditional one returned in 1993.
