Wolfsburg was born in 1938 as a new town, designed to house the workers of the Volkswagen factory. Seven years later, on September 12, 1945, one woman and eleven men founded the club in a barracks on Reislinger Straße. It was first called VSK Wolfsburg and soon afterwards became Verein für Leibesübungen (VfL) Wolfsburg, with sections for football, handball, gymnastics, tennis, cycling, boxing and chess. The colors came about by chance: in the depths of the postwar years only ten green shirts could be found, and the players' wives sewed the shorts from white bed sheets. At the end of that same…

It has been Wolfsburg's stadium since December 2002 and stands in the Allerpark, near the Volkswagen factory and the city center. It was built in around 19 months at a cost of 53 million euros; it is a two-tier, fully roofed stadium for around 29,000 people. There the team sealed the 2009 title with a 5-1 win over Werder Bremen and beat Real Madrid 2-0 in the 2015-16 Champions League quarter-finals. In 2011 it hosted four matches of the Women's World Cup under the name Arena im Allerpark.

The fans
Wolfsburg's fan base grew up alongside the factory: for decades almost all of the club's players worked at the Volkswagen plant, which today owns the entire professional football company. The club considers its matches against Hannover 96 and Eintracht Braunschweig to be derbies, and keeps its own statistics for both fixtures. In 2017 it avoided relegation by winning both legs of the play-off against Braunschweig, its regional rival. The fans in the curve campaigned for more than twenty years for the return of the battlements crest, which the club brought back in May 2026.
