It was Wolfsburg's home for 55 years, from its opening on October 10, 1947 until the move to the Volkswagen Arena in 2002. It began life as the VfL-Platz, a ground with standing terraces and an athletics track, and in 1961 added a covered stand, largely funded by the city and Volkswagen and now a listed monument. In 1996 floodlights and a new side stand were inaugurated, and it was there that the team won promotion to the Bundesliga on June 11, 1997. Afterwards it was used by the women's team and the reserves until 2014; today it is used mainly by the club's athletics section.
