Racing Club was born in Avellaneda, then called Barracas al Sud, on 25 March 1903. It was formed by members of Barracas al Sud and Colorados Unidos del Sud, who decided to merge. The name was taken from a French motor-racing magazine, and the minutes that made the name Racing Football Club official are dated 7 February 1904. In its early years the club tried out several shirts: a white one, one with yellow and black vertical stripes, another with sky blue and salmon checks, and a blue one with a white band. In 1910, at the suggestion of Pedro Werner, it adopted sky blue and white in tribute…

It was built between 1948 and 1950 on the same site as the old Alsina y Colón ground, rotated 90 degrees relative to it, with loans from the government of Juan Domingo Perón, after whom it was named. It opened on 3 September 1950 with a 1-0 Racing win over Vélez Sarsfield, the goal scored by Llamil Simes, and in 1951 it hosted the opening and closing ceremonies of the first Pan American Games. In 1967 it staged the second match of the Intercontinental final against Celtic, won 2-1, before a record crowd of some 120,000. Between 1995 and 1997 it was fitted with a translucent sky blue roof, which made it the first Argentine stadium with all of its seated stands covered.

The fans
Racing's supporters are known as “La N.° 1” and “La Guardia Imperial”. Every 7 March is Racing Fans' Day, in memory of the day in 1999 when some 30,000 people filled El Cilindro to stop the club from being shut down, days after the court-appointed receiver had announced that it had ceased to exist. Its great rival is Independiente, with whom it contests the Avellaneda derby: the two stadiums are only a few hundred metres apart, and they first met in 1907.
