It was opened in 1921 as Peñarol's home, in the Montevideo neighbourhood of Pocitos. On July 13, 1930 it hosted the match between France and Mexico at the first World Cup, in which Lucien Laurent scored the first goal in World Cup history. It fell out of use when Peñarol moved to the Centenario, and today its site is occupied by streets and houses.
