It was opened on March 28, 2016 with a 4-1 Peñarol win over Argentina's River Plate. Its name recalls Peñarol's selection by the IFFHS as the best South American club of the 20th century. With its opening, Peñarol stopped playing its home games at the Estadio Centenario and gained its own stadium in Bañados de Carrasco, on the outskirts of Montevideo.
