It was opened on July 18, 1930 for the first World Cup and hosted the final in which Uruguay beat Argentina 4-2. In 1983 FIFA declared it a historic monument of world football. Peñarol played its home games there from 1933 until 2016, when it moved to the Campeón del Siglo.
