Club history

Colo-Colo is a club from Santiago founded on 19 April 1925 by a group of players led by David Arellano, who took the name of the Mapuche toqui (war leader) Colo Colo. It is the most successful club in Chilean football, with 34 Primera División titles, and the only club in the country to have won the Copa Libertadores (1991). It has never been relegated and plays its home games at the Estadio Monumental, in Macul.

## A club born from a rebellion In April 1925, a group of young Magallanes players led by David Arellano left that club after an internal dispute: they were asking for regular payments and clearer criteria for picking the starting line-up. On 19 April 1925, at the Estadio El Llano, they founded a new team. Forward Luis Contreras suggested the name Colo Colo, a Mapuche toqui (war leader) who fought against the Spanish conquistadors, and the idea was accepted. The kit was decided that same day: white shirt and black shorts, the colours the club has never abandoned.

The club plays here
Since 1989

It is Colo-Colo's own stadium, in the commune of Macul, in south-east Santiago. The club bought the land in 1956 and construction went ahead with many interruptions: it was opened on 20 April 1975, but stopped being used shortly afterwards because it lacked basic services. It was reopened on 30 September 1989 with a 2-1 win over Peñarol, and in 1991 it hosted the Copa Libertadores final won by Colo-Colo. Its attendance record is 69,305, set at a match against Universidad de Chile in 1992. The pitch is named after David Arellano, the club's founder, and in 2025 a statue of him was placed at the Océano entrance, alongside those of Carlos Caszely and Francisco “Chamaco” Valdés.

The fans

Colo-Colo is regarded as the club with the most supporters in Chile, and its fans are known as “albos”. Its main supporters' group is the Garra Blanca, which usually stages the traditional “arengazo” (a mass rally) before the Superclásico and prepares huge welcome displays at the Monumental. Its great rival is Universidad de Chile, against whom it plays the Superclásico of Chilean football. It also has derbies with Universidad Católica and with Magallanes, the club its founders broke away from.
