It is the most successful club in Copa Libertadores history, with seven titles, and won the Intercontinental Cup in 1973 and 1984. Independiente was born in 1904, when a group of young men broke away from the Maipú Banfield club to found one of their own. According to tradition, Rosendo Degiorgi proposed the name by shouting “Independiente!”. The first meeting was held on 4 August 1904, but the club set 1 January 1905 as its official founding date. Over the years it settled in Avellaneda, where its headquarters and stadium stand today.

Built on the same site as the Doble Visera in Avellaneda, it was officially opened on 28 October 2009 with Independiente's 3-2 win over Colón de Santa Fe, while much of the work was still unfinished; Andrés Silvera scored the first goal. The name Libertadores de América, a nod to the club's Copa Libertadores titles, came from a fan poll announced on 10 October 2005. On 8 December 2010 it hosted the Copa Sudamericana final, which Independiente won on penalties against Goiás after a 3-1 victory. The stadium was completed in stages: the Bochini Alta stand opened in 2014 and the full stadium was inaugurated on 16 December 2016, against Banfield; since 5 December 2021 it has also carried the name of Ricardo Enrique Bochini.

The fans
Its supporters celebrate Fans' Day every 26 March, the birthday of Ricardo Bochini. The date commemorates the caravan of more than 100,000 people who, for the club's centenary in 2005, travelled from the street corner where the club was born to the stadium. Its great rival is Racing Club, with whom it contests the Avellaneda derby: the two stadiums are only a few hundred metres apart, and the first meeting took place in 1907.
