Opened on 4 March 1928 with a 2-2 friendly against Peñarol of Montevideo, it was Argentina's first concrete stadium. Its nickname comes from the side canopy added in 1961, which joined the original reinforced-concrete covered stand. It was Independiente's home for almost 80 years: the last match was played on 8 December 2006, a 2-1 defeat to Gimnasia y Esgrima de Jujuy. In 2007 it was demolished to build the current Libertadores de América stadium on the same site.
