The Stadium of Light opened on July 30, 1997 with a 0-0 friendly against Ajax, a few hundred metres from Roker Park. It was built on the site of a former coal mine, and its name and the large miner's lamp at the entrance recall that mining past. Its attendance record is 48,353 spectators, for a match against Liverpool in 2002.
