Roker Park opened on September 10, 1898 with a 1-0 Sunderland win over Liverpool. In 1933 it held 75,118 spectators for an FA Cup match against Derby County, its all-time record. It was a venue at the 1966 World Cup, with group matches and the quarter-final between the Soviet Union and Hungary, and the noise of its crowd became famous as the “Roker Roar”. After the move in 1997 it was demolished and housing was built in its place.
