Home shirt in red and white stripes. In many league matches it carried the simplified version of Sunderland's coat of arms that the team had first worn in the 1937 FA Cup final, although shirts without a crest were also used. As reigning cup holders, Sunderland finished 8th in the First Division and reached the semi-finals of the FA Cup, where they lost 3-1 to Huddersfield Town.
