The club's first red and white shirt: in 1884 Sunderland dropped the navy blue of their early years and adopted a shirt split into red and white halves; vertical stripes would arrive in 1887-88. In that 1884-85 season the club made its FA Cup debut and lost 3-1 to Redcar in the first round, on November 8, 1884.
