In 1978 Sporting Cristal finished third in the Torneo Descentralizado and did not make the final liguilla, which was won by Alianza Lima. In the Copa Libertadores they finished second in their group, behind Alianza, and did not advance. It was the core of the side that would win back-to-back titles in 1979 and 1980, with several players who went to the 1978 World Cup in Argentina. The recreation shows a lavender sky-blue shirt with a white shirt collar and short sleeves.
