It was the venue for the 1964 European Championship final, the 1982 World Cup final and four European Cup and Champions League finals (1957, 1969, 1980 and 2010). In 2018 it hosted the second leg of the Copa Libertadores final between River Plate and Boca Juniors. The renovation begun in 2019 added a retractable roof and a pitch that is stored underground.
