1924–1947

It opened on May 17, 1924 with a 3-2 win over Newcastle United, in Chamartín de la Rosa, then a municipality bordering Madrid. It replaced the Campo de O'Donnell, which the club had outgrown, and was Madrid's home until the mid-1940s. When it too became too small, the club built the Nuevo Chamartín, opened in 1947 and now called Santiago Bernabéu.
