It was driven by Ángel Rodríguez Ruiz, an engineering student and its first president, together with medical students Octavi Aballí and Lluís Roca. The name had a purpose: other clubs in the city were made up mostly of foreigners, and this one wanted to give a place to local players and to those from the rest of Spain. The fans
Espanyol supporters are known as «pericos» or «periquitos» (parakeets). The nickname dates back to the 1920s, when cartoonist Valentí Castanys drew the club's small following as «cuatro gatos» (a handful of cats); after Felix the Cat premiered in Spain in 1929, people began to speak of «los cuatro gatos pericos». Their great rival is FC Barcelona, against whom they play the Barcelona derby, one of the most frequently played fixtures in La Liga. At every home game, fans applaud in the 21st minute in memory of captain Dani Jarque.
