The current club was born from the union of two Kiel clubs. Kieler Fußball-Verein von 1900 (KFV) takes as its founding date October 7, 1900, the day a group of players from the games section of the gymnastics club KMTV traveled to Lübeck to play a football match. On May 4, 1902, students at Kiel's Oberrealschule founded FC Holstein, which soon became the city's dominant team and was renamed FV Holstein in 1908 and SV Holstein in 1914. On June 7, 1917, in the middle of the First World War, the two clubs merged at the Zentral-Hotel under the name Kieler Sportvereinigung Holstein von 1900: it…

It has been Holstein Kiel's ground since it opened on October 15, 1911 under the name Holstein-Sportplatz, in the north of Kiel, at Westring 501. After the damage of the Second World War, the main stand that still exists was built in 1950, and since the 1965 promotion round it has been called the Holstein-Stadion. The 2006 renovations, with new covered stands on a tubular structure, and the new east stand opened in 2019 brought it to 15,034 places. At the end of the 2025-26 season its reconstruction began on the same site: during the works capacity dropped to 11,700, and the new stadium, for around 22,000 people, is due to open in the second half of 2030.
The fans
Its supporters, “die Störche”, have “Kiel Ahoi” as their motto, and their meeting point is the west stand of the Holstein-Stadion; since 2024 the Block 501 association has acted as the fans' spokesgroup, and the club recognizes 13 official fan clubs, such as Förde Lords, Küstentruppe and Kieler Fischköppe. The great rival is VfB Lübeck: the club calls the regional derby the hottest clash in Schleswig-Holstein, where for decades it was decided who ruled football in the state. Matches against the two Hamburg clubs are lived as northern derbies: the stadium's attendance record was set against Hamburger SV in 1951, and against St. Pauli, a frequent rival in the same league, it plays the so-called Nordderby.
