Grêmio was born in Porto Alegre on 15 September 1903. That day, 32 young men met at the Salão Grau, in the city centre, and elected Carlos Luiz Böhrer as the first president. The idea came from Cândido Dias da Silva, a native of São Paulo who, days earlier, had lent his ball for an exhibition by Sport Club Rio Grande and learned there how to found a club. In 1904 the team settled at the Baixada, in the Moinhos de Vento neighbourhood, and on 18 July 1909 it beat Internacional 10-0 in the first Gre-Nal.

Grêmio's stadium since it opened on 8 December 2012 with a 2-1 win over Hamburg, the same opponent as in the 1983 Tokyo final. It lies in the north zone of Porto Alegre, next to the BR-290 motorway. It was designed as a multi-purpose stadium with advice from the Amsterdam Arena. In 2024 the Rio Grande do Sul floods left it underwater, and full crowds only returned in October of that year. The club reports a licensed capacity of 57,387.
The fans
Grêmio's supporters find their great rivalry in the Gre-Nal against Internacional, played since 18 July 1909, when Grêmio won 10-0 at the Baixada. That remains the biggest win in the derby's history. A distinctive trait is the “avalanche”: at the old Olímpico, fans in the Geral would surge en masse towards the fence after every goal. At the Arena it was restricted after a railing collapsed in January 2013. The official anthem, by Lupicínio Rodrigues, sums up the idea of following Grêmio wherever it plays.
