The first season with advertising on the shirt: the CR Smith name appeared on the Umbro hoops. In 1984-85 Celtic won the Scottish Cup, beating Dundee United 2-1 in the final, and were second in the league. In the Cup Winners' Cup they knocked out Gent and fell to Rapid Wien in the second round: the second leg, which Celtic had won 3-0, was replayed at Old Trafford because a Rapid player was hit by an object, and there the Austrian side won 1-0.
