Hummel home shirt inspired by the 1986-88 design, with red and white stripes, the crest in the centre of the chest and a vertical pattern on the white stripes inspired by the city's new Keel Crossing bridge; it carried W88 on the chest. It was the shirt of the return to the Premier League: Sunderland finished 7th with 54 points and qualified for the Europa League, their first European competition since 1973. In the FA Cup they reached the fifth round, where they lost to Port Vale, and in the League Cup they went out in the second round on penalties against Huddersfield Town.

Sunderland returned to the Premier League in the 2025-26 season, a year after winning the Championship play-off. It was their first season in the top flight since 2016-17, and the team was managed by Régis Le Bris.
The club invested heavily in the transfer market to compete among the elite. The most important signings included Granit Xhaka, from Bayer Leverkusen, Enzo Le Fée and Brian Brobbey.
The opening game was a sign of things to come: Sunderland beat West Ham United 3-0 at the Stadium of Light.
The final matchday was played on May 24, 2026. Sunderland hosted Chelsea and won 2-1, with a goal from Trai Hume and an own goal by Malo Gusto. They finished 7th, with 54 points.
That 7th place earned them a spot in the 2026-27 Europa League. It was the first time since 1973 that Sunderland had qualified for a European competition, after a wait of more than fifty years.
The cup runs were shorter. In the FA Cup they knocked out Everton on penalties and Oxford United, and lost 1-0 to Port Vale in the fifth round. In the League Cup they went out in the second round, on penalties against Huddersfield Town.
