Hummel home shirt in red and white stripes with the Vaux sponsor, worn between 1988 and 1991. Sunderland finished sixth in the Second Division, knocked Newcastle United out in the play-off semi-finals and lost the final to Swindon Town, but were promoted in their place because Swindon were punished for irregular payments. They also reached the quarter-finals of the League Cup.

Sunderland went into the 1989-90 season in the middle of a rebuild. In 1987 they had dropped to the third tier for the first time, but came back the following year as Third Division champions, and in 1988-89 they finished mid-table in the Second Division.
