Since 1932

It is the home of San Martín de Tucumán, at Bolívar and Pellegrini, in the Ciudadela district of San Miguel de Tucumán. The club bought the land in 1930, after selling its first stadium to pay off debts, and opened it on 24 March 1932 with a friendly against Uruguay Postal of Montevideo. In 1968 it switched on its floodlights for a Nacional match against San Lorenzo. Expanded several times, it has an official capacity of around 30,000 and is famous for the pressure generated by its fans.

The fans

Its fans are the «cirujas», one of the most loyal supporter groups in northern Argentina, with fan clubs set up by people from Tucumán in other provinces such as Córdoba and Santa Cruz. Its great rival is Atlético Tucumán, with whom it has contested the Tucumán derby since 1911: the first official match was played on 28 May that year and Atlético won 2-0. It is one of the most evenly matched derbies in the country, with almost 290 official meetings and a gap of only a few wins depending on who is counting. La Ciudadela is the heart of the fan base and the gathering point for every celebration.
