It was built after the Second World War on the site where BSK used to play, and its first match was a Yugoslavia v France game that ended 1-1 on October 9, 1949, although the official opening came in 1951. For decades it was called the JNA Stadium, after the Yugoslav People's Army, and in the first post-war years it served as the de facto national stadium. It held as many as 55,000 people, almost all of them standing, until the 1998 renovation turned it into an all-seater stadium.
