It was opened on March 6, 1997 with a 3-1 Liga de Quito win over Atlético Mineiro. In June 2017, on its 20th anniversary, it took the name of Rodrigo Paz Delgado, former mayor of Quito and a historic figure in the club's leadership, who had driven the project. There Liga beat Fluminense 4-2 in the first leg of the 2008 Copa Libertadores final and 5-1 in the first leg of the 2009 Copa Sudamericana final.
