Since 1989

It opened in 1989 in Nasrec, on the edge of Soweto, and its first match was the JPS Knockout final, which Kaizer Chiefs won 2-1 against Moroka Swallows. For the 2010 World Cup it was renovated with a design evoking an African pot, hence its nickname The Calabash, and it hosted the opening match and the final of that tournament, which Spain won 1-0 against the Netherlands. It was also the venue for the Africa Cup of Nations finals of 1996 and 2013.
