Ipswich Town nació el 16 de octubre de 1878 como Ipswich Association Football Club. Lo fundaron en una reunión en el Ayuntamiento de Ipswich, en su mayoría antiguos alumnos de la Ipswich School, y su primer presidente fue el diputado Thomas Cobbold. En 1884 se instaló en Portman Road, su estadio hasta hoy. En 1888 se fusionó con el club de rugby de la ciudad y tomó el nombre de Ipswich Town.
