The original Wembley was built as the centrepiece of the British Empire Exhibition and opened on April 28, 1923 with the FA Cup final. Its Twin Towers made it famous around the world. It was the main stadium of the 1948 Olympic Games, and there England won the 1966 World Cup final against West Germany. It closed with a 0-1 England defeat to Germany in October 2000 and was demolished from 2002 onwards.
