It opened on September 20, 1936 with a friendly against Boca Juniors, and a week later it hosted its first official match, against Independiente. It was born with wooden stands, some of them brought from the old Lechero Ahogado ground, and over the years it gradually became a concrete stadium. In the mid-1950s, under the presidency of Mario Piotti, it added the covered stand on Guido Spano, inaugurated in December 1955 with a 3-0 win over Boca. It is known as the Coliseo de Victoria.
