## One club, two origins Today's Botafogo was born from the union of two clubs from the Botafogo neighbourhood of Rio de Janeiro. Club de Regatas Botafogo was founded on 1 July 1894 for rowing. The fans

Botafogo supporters are known as botafoguenses or alvinegros, and the press uses nicknames such as Glorioso and Fogão for the club. Its oldest derby is against Fluminense, the Clássico Vovô, considered the oldest in Brazilian football (first played in 1905); against Vasco da Gama it plays the Clássico da Amizade (the "Friendship Derby"), named after the good relationship the two sets of fans have historically enjoyed, and it also has a fierce rivalry with Flamengo. A much-loved tradition is Biriba, a black-and-white dog that in 1948 became the lucky charm of the Carioca-winning team; the club also has Manequinho, a replica of Brussels' Manneken Pis, as a mascot.
