The club was founded in Angers in October 1919 as Sporting Club du Crédit de l'Ouest, driven by the Fortin brothers, executives of the Crédit de l'Ouest bank, in the same year the French Football Federation was created. It played its first official match on 19 October 1919 against Stade Nantes Université Club, the forerunner of FC Nantes, and lost 2-1. It was soon renamed Sporting Club de l'Ouest. In 1931, when the Bessonneau factories stopped funding Club Sportif Jean-Bouin, SCO took in most of its players and became the city's leading club. In 1943 it won the French amateur championship.

It is the main stadium in Angers. It was opened in 1912 by the industrialist Julien Bessonneau and in 1957 passed into the hands of the city, which removed the athletics track and built the Saint-Léonard stand. It was called Jean-Bouin until 2017, when the city council named it after Raymond Kopa, the 1958 Ballon d'Or winner, who began his professional career at SCO. It added the Colombier stand in 1993 for promotion to the top flight, the Coubertin stand in 2010 in place of the old grassy mound, and a new Saint-Léonard stand in 2022, which raised capacity to 19,800. Its attendance record is 22,989 spectators, against Olympique de Marseille in 1969.
The fans
Its supporters, the “Scoïstes”, identify with the club's black and white. The best-known ultras group is the Kop de la Butte (KDLB), active since 1992: the “butte” was a grassy mound behind one of the goals where the most fervent fans gathered, and the Coubertin stand was built in its place in 2010. The great rival is FC Nantes: the club traces the origin of the derby back to its first match, in 1919, against Nantes' predecessor, and describes it as a territorial rivalry of more than a hundred years between two Loire cities less than 100 km apart. There is also a regional derby with Stade Lavallois, which dates from the late 1970s.
